As a makeup artist I must say my DSLR camera is one of the best investments I have made. Asides from the fact that it produces beautiful HD footage, it is the best preview tool when it comes to perfecting a look. It picks up more than the naked eye usually sees and with this profession attention to detail is so important! I’ve talked about my camera in a vlog before but if you didn’t catch it I am currently using a Canon Rebel T2i. It’s my starter DSLR and I will advance to another one when I feel it is time 😀
I’ve had a growing admiration and appreciation for photography ever since I started doing makeup for photo shoots. You would be surprised how much effort goes into producing a beautiful image.
I was looking at some different make up looks that appeared on the runway because I draw inspiration from anything and everything. I came upon an image of Sun Fei Fei that I couldn’t take my eyes off of. She was sporting a graphic liner look on the runway and I loved how striking yet simple it was. She has one of those gorgeous faces that you could do so much with to manipulate her look.
I further looked her up and came upon the cover of the Vogue China March 2011 edition. It sparked up a whole lot of creative energy in me and lead me to do everything in my power to recreate it!
I wanted to challenge myself and this was truly a challenge! Imagine being your own model, makeup artist, and photographer in one to try to replicate an image. Not to mention your own videographer who films tutorials and produces them to share with everyone 😉 I am not a photographer so learning how to use the DSLR was and still is quite difficult for me. Life would be much easier if I had my own personal photographer and videographer whenever I need one but I wouldn’t have learned as much as I have if I didn’t challenge myself
I had every intention of snapping good quality pictures and filming snippets of Britney performing but we got caught with our DSLR cameras in the middle of Nicki Minaj’s opening act. They made us check in our cameras after she had finished performing. “Professional” camera and video equipment was supposedly not allowed but yet they allowed us to walk in with them in the first place! O_o This makes me so sad because I didn’t bring a point and shoot so I could only try my best to film with my phone. The pictures turned out horribly but the videos turned out better so I may share some of that footage in a future youtube vlog!
For now I can only briefly talk about my experience and show you the outfit I put together as I mentioned I would
This was my first Britney Spears concert ever and I have been a huge fan of her ever since her first hit single, “Hit Me Baby One More Time”. Can you imagine how excited I was when she performed this song?? I came into this concert with little to no expectations so I actually thought she was going to mostly perform the songs from her new Femme Fatale album. She only performed about 5 from that album and surprisingly many other older songs! I also made sure to not watch recent clips of her concerts so that I wouldn’t spoil it for myself. I thought she looked great and the show production was incredible! Nicki Minaj was also an amazing opening! Even my boyfriend (who is not a big Britney fan like I am) was impressed with this show.
Before this concert day I had been debating on what to wear. Originally I thought it would be fun to recreate an outfit and look from one of her popular music videos. Of course I wanted to go all out but I couldn’t find the red wig I was looking for. I have no regrets though because it was probably for the best since wigs aren’t the most comfortable anyways. You can probably guess which look I had in mind 😉 This is definitely a potential look for either a future tutorial or for Halloween 😀
I also thought if all fails I could try to put together a fun sequin-y or skimpy Britney-esque outfit but I wasn’t satisfied with what was available at the shops that I searched through.
Little did I know, I ended up wearing a shirt that I had recently started to DIY. So here’s an idea of how the shirt originally looked like before I had started to cut it up.
This is a random image of a fitted tee that I pulled from Google since I didn’t take a before picture of the actual shirt.
To give you an idea, the original shirt had a small opening for the head and the sleeves were a little longer and fitted so it was pretty unflattering for my boyish figure. After watching different videos on how to make your own crop top and fringe tops I was definitely inspired! I cut up the sleeves, collar to widen it, and the bottom edge of the shirt. I ,of course, also cut the slits for the fringe and tied knots at the bottom of each strand. I then pulled and stretched out each strand as well as the collar and sleeve openings to have the ends curl a bit.
I thrifted this tee from Goodwill a while back so I must say i’m pretty happy to make something better out of it! It feels good to wear something you put your own personal touch on
So what did I wear with the shirt?
Necklace and purse are from asos.com, Dollhouse Rogeri boots, American Eagle shorts, bracelets from H&M, NYX Matte nail polish in Sky BlueAnd here’s the completed look! You won’t be able to tell from these pictures but I also did an inspired makeup look of what she had on in her “I Wanna Go” music video.
I carried a whole bunch in my bag: Canon DSLR camera, extra blue sandals shown below (since I would rather not stand in heels the entire duration of the concert), and of course some makeup, keys, phone, etc.
Hi all! How is everyone’s weekend going so far? Mine has been great! I wish I could share more pictures from this weekend with you guys but due to time I am going to only post some from a quick photo shoot I did with http://matthewmwong.com/photography today. The first and last picture in this post were taken by me. So here’s a FOTD (face of the day) and OOTD (outfit of the day) for you.
I decided to go for a softer pin-up type of look just to keep it more youthful and summery.
Few key products that i’m wearing: Missha BB Cream No. 23, MAC Dolly Mix blush on cheeks, Maybelline Ultra Liner winged out on upper lid, MAC lipstick in Viva Glam Cyndi with Revlon Colorburst lipstick in Carnation on top
I have officially become a Gleek and I know i’m late but now I get to look forward to the next season! I started watching season 2 first and fell in love. I am now finishing up season 1! Things are making more sense now that i’m catching up on the first season haha
I have been enjoying this show so much that I felt inspired to do some kind of Glee themed video. As far as makeup goes, I think we can all agree that Tina Cohen-Chang’s makeup look varies the most from episode to episode. I especially love it when she wears really bright bold colors on her lids! Who said those with monolids can’t rock the bright colors? I completely disagree.
In some episodes I saw her with a really bright pink eye shadow look that really caught my eye! So I present to you..
a promo ad of my next tutorial! lol I decided to do this look on my younger sister for a couple different reasons that you will find out in the upcoming video
After the video shoot in which I did her makeup, we then had a mini photo shoot to create the promo ad above. I took the picture with the Canon T2i that i’ve been using to film some of my videos and the true photographer from http://matthewmwong.com/photography did all of the editing.
We were trying to recreate a similar image to this poster:
not too shabby huh?
Stay tuned for the upcoming tutorial!
Update: The video is up! Check it out
and p.s. also 2 upcoming giveaways that will most likely be hosted on this blog! (Here’s an early heads up for you) 😉
The coral/orange lip look has been such a hit this spring and summer of 2011 that I couldn’t help but have the urge to find the perfect shade for myself.
The few coral lippies that I have in my stash are either not orange enough or are too shimmery for my liking. I recalled that I had a yellow OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) Lip Tar amongst other shades so a light bulb flashed above my head!
Why not just custom mix my own coral/orange lip shade! These OCC Lip Tars are serious business. While they appear to look and function as a gloss, I would better describe these as a gel-like paint for the lips. I find most lip glosses to be too sheer or too sticky but these however, have incredible color payoff and feel smooth on the lips. What you see is what you get and you literally only need a tiny amount. The glossy shine wears off after some time and leaves more of a matte finish on the lips.
These are so potent that they can slightly stain your skin. I would suggest using a lip brush and a mixing palette if you plan to mix your own shades. Don’t have a stainless steel makeup palette to do your artsy color mixing on? Use the back of a (spoiled or unused) CD as your mixing palette!
I’ve acquired several different shades from IMATS and The Makeup Show but they are available online at $13 USD each here: http://www.occmakeup.com/lips.html.
The three lip tar shades I used (top to bottom in image) are Traffic, Vintage, and Pageant.
It’s little experiments like this that caused me to love the art of makeup in the first place. When you play around with different textures and create your own colors, it’s as if you’ve become this mad scientist makeup artist of your own.
Thanks for reading! Kisses 😉
(Yes that’s my actual lip print using the lip color I created!)
